In the last instalment in the Signs of OCD series, I want to discuss fear.
Fear maintains OCD. This means that to overcome Obsessive – Compulsive Disorder you have to overcome the fear. It sounds scary, but once you know how you can quickly become the expert in managing the OCD.
An obsessive thought is scary – it makes you feel fear and you’ll do anything to make go away. Compulsions work, but only for a minute until the scary thought comes back.
While obsessions can be categorized into subtypes, they are very unique and typically target something you love. That’s why OCD is so scary – it literally makes you believe that your worst fear is going to come true and the only way to prevent it is to ritualize.
OCD is Wrong.
Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) teaches OCD who is in charge (HINT: It’s YOU) and helps you to develop the tools to fight back against OCD. This process elicits anxiety and requires courage, but courage overcomes fear.
