Living with Uncertainty: What OCD Treatment Can Teach us about COVID-19

People living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can teach us a lot about how to live with uncertainty and fear. They do it every day.

My clients work hard to tolerate uncertainty through a process called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Through ERP, people with OCD learn to accept that control and certainty don’t exist. They learn to face the fear of uncertainty while tolerating all of the associated (and often unpleasant) emotions.

While experiencing fear is a valid reason to be anxious, we can learn how to tolerate the discomfort and uncertainty in the presence of fear. No one knows how to do this better than someone living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Be well, wash your hands and trust the uncertainty.
