Over the time of supporting individuals experiencing OCD, I have heard multiple times a common wish. This common wish is for a different type of OCD. Some people wish to have a different fear, various compulsions, or overall different experiences with OCD. These wishes often come from frustration and fear, in addition to many other emotions.
As a therapist, I work with powerful individuals who face all types of OCD; contamination, pedophilia, harm, relationship, sexuality, “just right,” the list goes on. The one thing that is common in all individuals with all types of OCD is distress. No matter the OCD type or even a type at all, everyone is left facing their personal fear. Their day-to-day lives become impacted and controlled by the bully we all know too well as OCD.
What I am saying is, OCD is a bully, and it is awful to experience, but no one type of OCD is better to have than the other. No one type of OCD is less distressing or impactful than the other. No matter the type, OCD targets our core fears resulting in experiences of distress. One thing for certain, OCD is a bully that CAN be taken down, one exposure at a time. So, let’s use our energy to CONQUER OCD together!
